Angels starter Kelvim Escobar has yet to log a big-league inning in 2008 because of a shoulder injury, but the 18-game winner from 2007 began the week with high hopes for a successful comeback as a minor league rehab program progressed.
The positive outlook was shattered Friday.
Escobar, whose MRI exam earlier in the day showed no signs of deterioration in the shoulder, was forced to stop throwing because of pain after a few pitches on flat ground at Angel Stadium.
"Something is causing me a lot of inflammation," Escobar told reporters. "I don't know what it is. When I throw, it's taking a long time to recover. It's taking a lot longer than normal."
Escobar, 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA last season, was cleared to pitch after aggravating the injury Monday in a second rehab start. The 12-year veteran had also undergone an MRI exam on Wednesday, which revealed nothing abnormal in the shoulder beyond what was first diagnosed in March, when a torn labrum was discovered.
But Escobar is again considering season-ending surgery. And the Angels aren't hurting without the right-hander, leading the AL West by five games over the Athletics at 52-34.
Starters Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana are a combined 21-7, and closer Francisco Rodriguez leads the majors with 34 saves.
"Hopefully if something needs to be done, be just like a cleanup and it won't take longer to come back," Escobar said, according to the Orange County Register. "But I just don't know."

| The good news is we have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and we are mostly healthy escept for Escobar, so he can take his time and get it right. Our problem is we have the third worst hitting team, for average, in the American league. Sooner or later, if that doesn't improve, it will hurt us. |

| If only Kelvim Escobar wasn't injured...we would have the extra pitcher that we can trade that other teams would be looking for. |

Hope we can keep Teixeira rather than renting him for half a season.
